Don't be Mean Back (Luke 9:51-56)

A talk on the Gospel of Luke

In general, Christians get treated really well in the UK, but sometimes we might get a hard time from people because of our faith. Its tempting in such situations to get argumentative and combative, but this is not the way of Jesus. In today's Bible story we see how two of Jesus's disciples wanted to be vindictive to people who rejected Jesus, but Jesus corrected them.

Sometimes Christians get combative ideas from the Old Testament, and we address how to approach Old Testament stories of aggression.

Today's Bible story is:

Luke 9:51–56 (NIV)

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;

53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.

54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked,

“Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”

55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
